Claude Code limit reset: how it actually works, and how to track the wait
As of 2026-09-25, Claude Code’s official command reference lists no command that resets a usage limit — and this page cannot reset one for you either. What you can do is understand the two different resets people confuse, find the exact reset time shown by Claude itself, and turn the remaining wait into a countdown here so it is visible. Everything below was checked against Anthropic’s own documentation on 2026-09-25.
Two different things are both called a “Claude Code reset”
When people search for a “Claude Code reset”, they usually mean one of two different things — and confusing them wastes your time.
The scheduled reset. Your plan’s usage window ends, and your limits come back automatically. When that happens depends on how you signed in and which plan you are on: Claude Code on an organization Enterprise seat runs on a rolling window, and the message you get when a limit is reached tells you the reset time. Pro and Max subscribers can see their next reset time in Settings > Usage on claude.ai. Usage on an API key is billed per token with no hard cap, so there is no window to wait out at all.
The “Reset for free” offer. Occasionally, eligible plans receive a limit reset: a one-off chance to set your five-hour session limit or your weekly limit back to full, at a moment you choose. You do not have to wait until you hit a limit to use it, and you cannot undo it once used. Your regular weekly reset still happens on its usual day and time.
In short: one of these resets on a clock you read from Claude’s own interface; the other is an occasional offer you choose to use. This page helps you track the first — and know exactly what the second is when it shows up.
Claude Code’s own terminal gives you the time after a limit — but no reset button
Anthropic’s current help article is unambiguous: the “Reset for free” button isn’t currently available on Claude Mobile or in Claude Code in your terminal or IDE — you open Claude in a browser or use Claude Desktop instead. Your usage limits are shared across your Claude account, so once you reset them there, they are back to full in Claude Code too.
Inside the terminal itself, as of 2026-09-25, here is what exists:
- When a limit blocks you, the message tells you when your window resets (Enterprise seat).
/usage— also reachable as/costor/stats— shows your plan usage at any time./rate-limit-options, which Claude Code can open on its own when a claude.ai limit blocks a request, offers three official ways forward: wait and continue automatically when the limit resets, add usage credits, or upgrade your plan.
Claude Code’s official command reference lists no command that resets a usage limit as of 2026-09-25. If Anthropic ever ships one, its own documentation is the source of truth — not this paragraph. One honesty note: we found no first-hand official statement about warnings before a limit is reached, and this page claims neither that they exist nor that they don’t.
How to confirm your real reset time in Claude’s official interface
Do not guess your reset time from a forum post — read it where it is actually recorded:
- Claude Code on an Enterprise seat. When a limit is reached, the message in your terminal tells you when the window resets.
- Pro or Max on claude.ai. Open Settings > Usage. Your next reset time is listed there, and your weekly reset day and time are fixed for your account — they stay the same no matter when you start using Claude.
- API key billing. There is no window and no reset time; watch
/costin Claude Code and your Console or cloud-provider bill instead.
If your plan or screen does not match any of these, trust what your own account shows. This page never substitutes for your provider’s interface — it only counts down a window you set up from a time you confirmed there.
Turn the remaining time into a countdown
Once you have the real reset time, three steps turn the wait into something you can glance at:
- Check. Use the section above to get the end of your current window from Claude’s own interface, and note which plan or limit it belongs to.
- Register it. Count the minutes between now and that reset moment — that number is the window length. In the countdown tool, set Window started at to now (the now button beside the field fills it in), type that length into Window length in minutes, and give the window a name such as “Claude Code weekly”. Your entries stay in this browser’s local storage — no account, no upload, nothing leaves the page.
- Verify when it ends. A zero on the countdown only means the length you entered has run out. Go back to the official interface and confirm your usage is actually back. If you used “Reset for free” in the meantime, delete the old window and register a fresh one from the new reset time.
That length is arithmetic you did by hand from a time you read off Claude’s screen: if the subtraction was off, the countdown is off by the same amount, so the official interface stays the source of truth. QuotaClock never reads your Claude usage and cannot reset anything; it only counts down the window you set up.
What this site will not do
- It never connects to your Claude account and never reads your usage, tokens, or API keys.
- QuotaClock cannot reset a limit, trigger an offer, or speed up a window.
- It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Anthropic or Claude.
- Window lengths and reset rules are set by providers and change over time. Always confirm the current rule on the provider’s own documentation — the sources below are where this page’s claims come from, and they carry a “last verified” date for a reason.
Frequently asked questions
Can I reset my Claude Code usage limit from the terminal?
Not from the terminal itself. As of 2026-09-25, Claude Code’s official command reference lists no command that resets a usage limit, and the “Reset for free” button is not offered in the terminal or IDE. Eligible accounts occasionally receive a reset that must be used from the browser or Claude Desktop.
How do I know when my Claude Code limit resets?
It depends on how you signed in and your plan: the limit message in the terminal shows the reset time (Enterprise seat); Settings > Usage on claude.ai shows your next reset time (Pro/Max); /usage in Claude Code shows plan usage. Then work out the minutes left and register them here by hand.
Is “Reset for free” the same as the normal 5-hour or weekly reset?
No. The 5-hour session limit and the weekly limit reset on a schedule. “Reset for free” is an occasional offer to eligible plans that restores your limits immediately, at a time you choose; your weekly reset still happens on its usual day.
Does QuotaClock track my Claude usage or reset my limit for me?
No. It only counts down a window you set up by hand from a start time and a length. It never connects to your account and cannot trigger any reset.
I used “Reset for free” — what happens to my countdown?
Your limits are back to full right away, so your old window’s end time no longer means anything. Delete it and register a fresh one from the new reset time.

QuotaClock is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Anthropic or Claude.
QuotaClock is an independent, non-official tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Anthropic, OpenAI, or any other AI provider. It does not sign in to your accounts, does not read API keys, tokens, or usage data, cannot reset anything for you, and cannot promise that a provider's window rules stay the same. The countdown is built only from the times and lengths you type in. Window lengths and reset rules are set by each provider and change over time — always check the provider's own current documentation.
