ChatGPT dots pricing and usage limits: what counts toward your limits and what doesn’t

Every rule below was read from OpenAI’s own pages on 2026-09-30. Back to the QuotaClock home page.

Dots are the always-on agents OpenAI announced for ChatGPT on September 29, 2026. There is no separate price tag for your first dot: it comes with a Pro or Business Premium plan. The real question is what a dot does to your usage limits — and the answer depends on what you ask it to do. Chatting with your dot is free of limits; work it hands to Codex or ChatGPT Work is not. The table below puts each rule next to the official page it comes from.

QuestionWhat OpenAI saysOfficial source
Talking to your dotDoes not count. “Conversations with your dot don’t count toward your ChatGPT usage limits.”OpenAI: Introducing dots (Sep 29, 2026)
Tasks your dot starts or manages in Codex or ChatGPT WorkCounts as usual. “When you ask your dot to start or manage tasks in Codex or ChatGPT Work, those tasks count toward your usage limits as usual.”OpenAI: Introducing dots (Sep 29, 2026)
The first month after launchMore room, but the two official pages word it differently. The announcement says your plan “includes an allowance for deeper work, with extended limits for the first month after launch.” The Help Center says: “For the next month, dots usage won’t count toward eligible Pro, Business, and Enterprise users’ plan allowances.”OpenAI: Introducing dots (Sep 29, 2026)OpenAI Help Center: Getting started with your dot
After the first monthNot published yet. “After this period, we’ll share usage terms for each plan.”OpenAI Help Center: Getting started with your dot
Your first dotNo extra charge. “Your first dot is included in your Pro or Business Premium plan at no extra cost.”OpenAI: Introducing dots (Sep 29, 2026)
More dots, or more output per dotAnnounced for later, no price yet. “In the future, you’ll be able to add more dots, and scale the output of each dot by either increasing its speed or the total amount of work it can take on per month.”OpenAI: Introducing dots (Sep 29, 2026)

The one thing that will eat your Pro limits: tasks, not chat

A dot can do a lot without touching your limits: you can message it, think out loud with it, or call it, and those conversations do not count (OpenAI: Introducing dots (Sep 29, 2026)). What counts is the heavy work it launches on your behalf. When your dot starts or manages a task in Codex or ChatGPT Work, that task is metered exactly as if you had started it yourself.

So if you already use Codex on your plan, a busy dot draws on the same limits you do. A dot that picks up bug reports and opens pull requests through Codex can use up your Codex allowance before you open your editor. Watch the Codex tasks it creates — the Help Center confirms it can create cloud tasks in Codex cloud environments (OpenAI Help Center: Getting started with your dot).

The first-month exception — and why the wording matters

On 2026-09-30, OpenAI’s two official pages describe the launch month differently:

Neither page gives an exact end date for that month, and neither says in so many words whether a Codex task started by a dot is “dots usage”. We are not going to guess for OpenAI. The safe reading: treat Codex and ChatGPT Work tasks as metered, and check your usage in ChatGPT before a big run. When OpenAI publishes the per-plan terms, this page will be updated against them.

What dots cost: Pro 100, Pro 200, Pro 500 and Business Premium

Dots have no separate price at launch. What you pay for is the plan. ChatGPT Pro now comes in three monthly plans — $100, $200 and $500 (OpenAI Help Center: About ChatGPT Pro tiers). The new Pro 500 plan has the highest usage allowance, at 25 times the ChatGPT Plus allowance, and it is the only Pro plan with Ultrafast (OpenAI: DevDay 2026 Recap (Sep 29, 2026)). OpenAI’s pages do not say whether dots get a different allowance on Pro 100, Pro 200 or Pro 500, so this page doesn’t either.

Two dates matter if you already pay for Pro 200. Eligible existing subscribers keep their previous included allowance through Oct 29, 2026; after that the subscription moves to the lower allowance at the same $200 price (OpenAI Help Center: About ChatGPT Pro tiers). Business Premium includes your first dot too (OpenAI: Introducing dots (Sep 29, 2026)), but OpenAI’s pages above give no Business Premium price, so we don’t list one.

For the tier-by-tier picture — Pro 500 vs 200 vs 100, what Ultrafast costs, and where GPT-6.1 Sol’s API price fits — see the ChatGPT Pro pricing comparison. And if the Codex side of your plan is what keeps running dry: how Codex Cloud spends your allowance and what Codex Security Cloud costs.

Track the limits your dot hits — without handing over your account

When a model reaches its limit, ChatGPT shows the reset time when one is available, and Support cannot reset ChatGPT or Codex limits for you (OpenAI Help Center: About ChatGPT Pro tiers). That leaves you waiting on a clock you can only see inside ChatGPT. QuotaClock turns that clock into a countdown you can leave open:

  1. Read the reset time ChatGPT or Codex shows you. Settings → Usage in ChatGPT, or Usage & Billing in Codex, is where OpenAI says your balance lives.
  2. Register it in the countdown tool: set Window started at to now, type the minutes until that reset as the window length, and name it “Codex (dot tasks)”.
  3. Confirm when it ends. A zero on the countdown only means your own arithmetic ran out; check ChatGPT to make sure your usage is actually back.

The same method works for the dates on this page. For example, eligible Pro 200 subscribers can set a reminder for Oct 29, 2026. QuotaClock never signs in to ChatGPT and never reads your usage; see how it works. If you also run Claude Code next to Codex, the Claude Code limit reset guide covers where Anthropic shows its reset times.

Frequently asked questions

How much do ChatGPT dots cost?

Your first dot costs nothing extra: it is included in Pro and Business Premium. ChatGPT Pro is $100, $200 or $500 a month depending on the tier. OpenAI says you will be able to add more dots, or scale a dot’s speed or monthly workload, “in the future”. It has not published a price for that.

Do conversations with my dot count toward my ChatGPT usage limits?

No. OpenAI’s announcement says conversations with your dot don’t count toward your ChatGPT usage limits.

Do Codex tasks started by my dot count toward my limits?

Yes, per the announcement: tasks your dot starts or manages in Codex or ChatGPT Work count toward your usage limits as usual. The Help Center says dots usage won’t count toward plan allowances for the first month after launch. That wording is looser, and OpenAI has not reconciled the two yet.

What happens after the first month?

OpenAI has not said yet. The Help Center only says it will share usage terms for each plan after the first month.

Can I get dots on ChatGPT Plus?

Not at launch. OpenAI lists Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise (as a beta), and says it plans to expand dots to more users soon.

Can I get dots in the EU or UK?

On Pro, not yet: the Pro rollout excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK. Business Premium is available in all supported ChatGPT regions.
